Hard linking/cascading of OGSMs

In OGSM.online you can link multiple OGSMs together. In this article we show how you cascade (parts of) OGSMs. This means that for example a component in the organizational OGSM is elaborated in the departmental OGSM. This can be done in four ways.

Four ways of cascading

1. Strategy becomes objective

Example: You have an organizational OGSM where the strategies are programs. Each program has projects, which are the actions. You can elaborate the program in its own OGSM.

  • The strategy in the organizational OGSM becomes the objective of the departmental OGSM.
  • The indicators become the goals.
  • And the actions become the strategies.

All items are synchronized between these OGSMs. If you add an action to the organizational OGSM, for example, it appears as a strategy in the departmental OGSM.

You can create this link in two ways:

  1. Open the strategy in the organizational OGSM and add it as an objective to the departmental OGSM.
  2. Or if you already have the departmental OGSM set up: Open the objective of the departmental OGSM and add it as a strategy to the organizational OGSM.

Later in this article we show how to create this link.

2. Action becomes strategy

Example: you have an OGSM for the entire organization. An action is further elaborated by a department. You can add the action as a strategy to the departmental OGSM.

  • The action in the organizational OGSM becomes a strategy in the departmental OGSM.
  • Underlying actions of the action become actions in the departmental OGSM.

All items are synchronized between these OGSMs. If you add an action to the strategy in the departmental OGSM, it appears as a underlying action in the organizational OGSM.

You can create this link in two ways:

  1. Open the action in the organizational OGSM and add it as a strategy to the departmental OGSM.
  2. Or if you already have the departmental OGSM set up: Open the strategy of the departmental OGSM and add it as an action to the organizational OGSM.

Later in this article we show how to create this link.

3. Action becomes objective

Example: you have an OGSM where an action is a large program. You can elaborate this program in its own OGSM. You can then add the action as an objective to an empty OGSM.

  • The action in the organizational OGSM becomes the objective of the departmental OGSM.
  • The underlying actions become the strategies in the departmental OGSM.

All items are synchronized between these OGSMs. If you add a strategy to the departmental OGSM, it appears as a underlying action in the organizational OGSM.

You can create this link in two ways:

  1. Open the action in the organizational OGSM and add it as an objective to the departmental OGSM.
  2. Or if you already have the departmental OGSM set up: Open the objective of the departmental OGSM and add it as an action to the organizational OGSM.

4. Objective becomes objective

Suppose two teams work towards the same objective, but each with its own strategy. You can then keep one objective on both OGSMs.

  • The objective sits on both OGSMs and stays the same objective everywhere.
  • The strategies and actions differ per OGSM: you do not take those along.
  • The goals you can take along, so both teams steer on the same goals.

Unlike the first three ways, nothing changes about the type of item: an objective stays an objective. If you want to take the goals along, the other OGSM has to be empty. Otherwise the goals of both objectives get mixed up.

Below we show how to create these links.

  • Open the item you want to link.
  • Click on Add relation under the heading Relationships.
  • Under What do you want to do?, choose the type in the group Add as. If you want to add an action as an objective to an OGSM, choose the type Objective, for example.
  • Select the OGSM. You only see the OGSMs that you have access to as a user.
  • Click Save.

The item is now visible in both OGSMs.

For the types that take underlying items along, you can only choose an empty OGSM: OGSMs that already hold items are marked (not empty) and cannot be selected. When you add an action as an objective, the screen tells you the underlying actions come along. For a strategy or an objective you get a checkbox and decide yourself; leave it unticked and you can add the item to a filled OGSM, but the underlying items do not come along.

  • Also copy the underlying actions and KPIs into the OGSM: for a strategy or action that you add as an objective.
  • Also copy the underlying goals into the OGSM: for an objective that you add as an objective to a second OGSM.

Under the heading Relationships, the block Visible on shows every OGSM the item sits on. Hover over a row and click the pencil icon to edit or remove the link. The screen spells out what happens: the item disappears from that one OGSM, along with the items underneath it there, and stays in the other places.
